Earthquake in Japan: Comet on a mission to ensure no student is left behind.

September 12, 2024

The January 1 earthquake on the Noto Peninsula led to the large-scale evacuation of numerous families from the severely impacted city of Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture. The natural disaster caused significant damage to educational insitutions, leaving children with no prospect of being able to resume classes. In response, our team in Japan stepped in to help.

How we contributed

With a magnitude of 7.6, one of Japan’s worst earthquakes struck as families were celebrating on New Year’s Day, suddenly impacting thousands of lives. And when disaster strikes, children are among the most vulnerable.

Typically structured by routine, school, and family, children's lives are suddenly disrupted. With their homes and schools severely damaged, students face the challenge of continuing their education.

Through our recent donations, our local team supplied school materials, educational resources, and safe spaces for children affected by these challenging circumstances.

To us, these contributions are more than just items – they represent the foundation for rebuilding a stable routine, which is essential for emotional and mental well-being.

The donations

A portable microphone and speaker system to replace the broken sound system in the school’s gymnasium, enabling students to continue their activities without disruption.

School uniforms for families who lost them in the earthquake, helping students regain a sense of normalcy and dignity as they return to their studies.

Protective shoes for aftershocks, ensuring children can travel to and from school safely in the event of further seismic activity.

For Comet, education plays a critical role in providing children with a sense of security, especially in times of uncertainty or crisis. For many children, school is not just a place to learn—it is a safe, structured environment that offers stability. The routine of attending classes, interacting with peers, and engaging with teachers creates a sense of normalcy, which is vital.

As a high-tech company, we also believe that supporting children by equipping them with knowledge and skills helps them feel more in control of their future, giving them the confidence to face challenges with resilience and ultimately empowering them to build a better future.

And that's what we stand for.
