6 hours and countless lessons – our H2GP experience
May 14, 2025
This past weekend, it was finally time: we, the apprentices at Comet, lined up at the starting line of the 6h de Fribourg – a national race held as part of the Hydrogen Grand Prix (H2GP). After weeks of designing, testing, and teamwork, the big moment had arrived. And while the race turned out very differently than we’d hoped, it became an experience we won’t forget anytime soon.
From idea to starting line
How does a hydrogen-powered car actually work? That question marked the beginning of our project – and led to weeks of research, building, testing, and fine-tuning. Our goal was clear: to develop a functioning 1:10 scale model car that could complete as many laps as possible during the six-hour race.
But this was about more than just technology. We quickly realized how essential clear communication, collaborative decision-making, and time management are. Those lessons turned out to be just as valuable as any technical knowledge we gained.
Race day – with setbacks, solutions, and team spirit
Naturally, we were hoping everything would go smoothly on race day. Unfortunately, things took a turn early on: shortly after the start, another car made contact with ours – and a weak spot in our steering system became apparent. Ironically, it wasn’t one of our custom-built components that failed, but a purchased part: the servo arm. While our in-house constructions held strong, this one element kept causing trouble.
Despite several repair attempts, the steering never lasted for long. We had to pit again and again, losing valuable laps – but quitting was never an option. Looking back, that might have been our greatest strength: staying together and pushing forward, even when things got tough.
What we’ll take with us
This project challenged us technically – and as a team. We learned just how important communication, mutual respect, and solution-focused thinking are when things get stressful. And how much is possible when you work together, even if things don’t go to plan.
The H2GP has been one of the most impactful experiences of our apprenticeship so far. Because we were trusted to take ownership. Because we could experiment – and learn from our mistakes. And because we built something together, from the ground up.
For us, one thing is clear:
«The future belongs to those who understand tomorrow’s energy today.»

The employee initiative “100 ideas to tackle climate change” was launched at Comet in 2022. Now, another one of those ideas has become reality: the installation of a solar power system. With this step, we’re not only reducing our carbon footprint, but also turning employee-driven ideas into lasting impact. It’s a concrete move toward a more sustainable future – and a reminder that progress often starts with a single idea.

At Comet, we believe progress starts with curiosity – and few frontiers spark it like space. That’s why we’re partnering with Project HERMES as a sponsor – supporting the student team at ARIS to build and launch a bi-liquid propulsion rocket at the European Rocketry Challenge (EuRoC) in 2025. If successful, it will be the first Swiss rocket of its kind to reach an altitude of 8000 m – a major milestone for student aerospace in Switzerland. From cryogenic propellants to guided recovery, HERMES is a showcase of what happens when curiosity meets collaboration. Just like in our own work, their success depends on precision, teamwork, and a drive to go beyond – values we share as they reach for the skies.
