Sustainability and resilience: Comet’s new solar power system in Penang

What does it take to power a growing high-tech manufacturing facility more sustainably? At our Penang location, the answer now includes more than 2,300 solar panels, on-site battery storage, and a smarter approach to energy management. Together, these investments help reduce emissions, improve efficiency, and strengthen operational resilience.
Comet is expanding the use of renewable electricity across its global operations. Following the successful installation of a solar power system at the Flamatt site in 2025, the company has now added a large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) installation at Comet Technologies Malaysia in Penang. The system has been generating renewable electricity for the site since mid-2026 and marks another step in Comet's climate roadmap and its ambition to use 100% clean electricity by 2030.
Supporting growth with renewable energy
The new Penang facility has been designed for future growth, and energy demand will increase as production ramps up. The solar PV system supplies renewable electricity directly to site operations, helping reduce purchased electricity and improve cost efficiency. Beyond the environmental benefits, on-site generation strengthens energy management and supports long-term operational performance.
The system combines self-consumption with the ability to export surplus electricity to Malaysia's national grid when generation exceeds immediate demand. Under Malaysia's Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (ATAP), exported electricity is credited against Comet's electricity bill, creating additional value from renewable energy production.

Enhancing efficiency and resilience
Alongside the solar installation, Comet has commissioned a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Penang facility. While the BESS is not directly connected to the solar PV installation, it plays an important role in the site's overall energy strategy.
The battery system helps strengthen energy resilience by supporting critical operations during power interruptions and by supplying stored energy during peak demand periods. This can reduce maximum demand charges, optimize energy use and contribute to lower operating costs.
The project highlights how local site initiatives can support global climate goals while creating practical benefits for energy management and operational performance.
Sustainability of building recognized by Green Building Index (GBI)
The solar power system was key to achieving the site’s Green Building Index (GBI) Gold Certificate, which recognizes sustainable design, resource efficiency, and environmental performance. The solar power system complemented greenery and water-saving measures, which included redesigned landscaping with more bushes, additional rooftop planting, a rooftop spice garden, and rainwater harvesting for irrigation.
Together, these measures show how local site initiatives can support Comet’s global climate goals while creating practical benefits for sustainability, energy management and long-term operational performance.
