Comet in Japan: 25 years embracing progress and innovation.
September 20, 2024
This year marks a momentous occasion for Comet as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of our presence in Japan. What started in 1999 as a small but ambitious team of five has grown into a thriving operation that now unites all three of our divisions under one roof. To commemorate this milestone, our Japan team recently came together for a special celebration. From heartfelt speeches to a fun-filled round of “Comet Bingo,” the day reflected our close-knit culture and the achievements we’ve shared over the past 25 years. Read on to learn more about our history in the land of the rising sun.
The beginning of Comet Japan
In 1999, Comet embarked on an ambitious venture in Japan. Starting from a humble office in Shinagawa, the team set out to establish a foothold in the advanced industrial X-ray systems market. The small but determined team was part of Yxlon International, having recently spun off from Philips, and was eager to bring their expertise into the vibrant and competitive Japanese market.
The road wasn’t easy, but Japan’s reputation as a high-standard market pushed the team to continually improve. Over the years, Comet Japan has not only succeeded but thrived, partnering with leading companies in semiconductors, electronics, and the automotive sector – industries where precision, reliability, and innovation are paramount.
“If you can make it in Japan, you can make it anywhere.”
Stephan Haferl, CEO
A central hub for innovation and collaboration
As our footprint in Japan expanded, we moved to Yokohama to be closer to our customers. In 2021, we took a significant step forward by also being an important hub for the X-ray modules division. Now in 2024, the site proudly houses all three of Comet’s divisions – X-ray Systems (IXS), X-ray Modules (IXM), and Plasma Control Technologies (PCT). Under one roof, Comet Technologies Japan is stronger than ever. This integration allows us to draw upon our decades of experience, enabling us to better support our customers and respond to evolving market demands.
Comet's commitment to Japan and beyond
Japan has long been a cornerstone of Comet’s global strategy. The country’s tradition of technological excellence and meticulous craftsmanship has not only challenged us to continuously raise the bar but has inspired us in our mission to deliver cutting-edge solutions. Looking ahead, Comet’s presence in Japan will continue to play a crucial role in our global ambitions. We are poised for even greater success, with our operations ready to meet the increasing demands of the industries we serve.
"Together, we will build on the legacy of the past 25 years and create a future than we can ALL be proud of."
Luc Pivette, Country Manager Japan
Coming together in celebration
To mark this milestone, our Japan team recently hosted a special anniversary celebration. Employees gathered to commemorate 25 years of shared success, joined by our CEO. The day was filled with camaraderie and joy, and one of the highlights was a fun game of "Comet Bingo". The event was a great opportunity to reflect on the many milestones we’ve reached together – and to look forward to the exciting future that lies ahead.
Looking ahead: the next 25 years
As we celebrate 25 years of excellence in Japan, we are filled with optimism for what the future holds. Our journey in Japan is far from over – in fact, it feels like we are just getting started. With the strength of our teams and the support of our customers, the next 25 years promise to be just as dynamic and innovative as the last.
Thank you to all our employees, partners, and customers who have been part of our journey. Here’s to the next chapter of growth, innovation, and success, both in Japan and around the world!
